Figs

Key nutrients :  Potassium, carotenes, calcium, iron, zinc and vitamin C

Healing Properties : Dating from as far back as 7800BC figs have been used as a mild laxative but they are also beneficial for anaemia and osteoporosis.    Dried or ready to eat figs in particular have a high level of calcium and are therefore particularly useful for vegetarians in building strong healthy bones and providing iron for non-meat eaters.

Choosing and Cooking : Can be enjoyed in many different ways.  Try figs in a salad with feta cheese or with cheese or ham.   They can be eaten raw or poached, caramelized or even made into jam.
