Patient Hygiene

Hospital patients rarely wash their hands and may be responsible for spreading infections.  The role of healthcare workers in transferring infectious microbes from place to place and person to person in hospitals has been well studied.  Only 2 studies have looked at the potential for patients to spread infections in hospitals.  Now a Canadian Patient Tracking study has shown patients only washed their hands 30% of the time at bathroom visits, 40% of the time at meal times, 3% of the time using kitchens on wards, 3% of the time when going into their rooms (in a transplant unit) and only 7% of the time as they leave their rooms.  "The key message is that hand washing is an important way for people to protect themselves and prevent spread of infections."  Hamilton Health Screening - Ontario - October 2014.
