Shingles - Zostavax Vaccination

Childhood and chickenpox go hand-in-hand for the majority of us, with usually little more remaining afterwards than memories of a short period of quarantine and the application of pink calamine lotion. Yet, for one in four of us, as we get older, reactivation of the latent herpes varicella-zoster virus is a strong possibility. This time around it can have painful consequences. Lying dormant in the nervous tissue, when the virus reappears as Shingles, it not only brings the localised vesicular skin rash but, for around one in five people, the added complication of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

Age is against us when it comes to shingles with both the incidence and severity of the virus increasing as our years do; most cases occur in people over the age of 70 years. For people aged 55 and above a single dose of Zostavax®vaccine can help reduce the incidence of shingles and the burden of illness associated with the condition.
